| The date isnt hateful, I know id be damn proud if we had won it. Its just that when you watch a football match between say Russia and Greece, its a tad annoying to hear THAT game mentioned.
The philosophy is, be proud of who you are, just dont think it makes you better than anyone else, except Jimmy Hill of course

| I once worked with a guy who used to say, "Nobody's better than me - and I'm no better than anyone else." I liked that. And I'm joking about the Welsh. No, really. | |

| I went to Scotland and got chatting to a 'local' about the ruined crofts. I was told it was the fault of the British that they were in ruins because they went up there in the middle ages and burnt/wrecked or whatever all their land............... And they never forgave us.
So the Anglophobia started well before the football......
And most people are better than me (well, at something or other, even if it's finding their way round). But otherwise I agree with Ritva - and it is lovely to be able to agree with that backstabbing, knife wielding, clothes loving, far from demure being for once. Not about the Welsh though. I don't know any. I thought there were only sheep in Wales.

| Willow, the British includes the Scots - I think you mean the English. The event you mention was the Highland Clearances, which was a pretty appalling piece of work. I direct you to John Prebble's characteristically gripping account.
I think it's important to note that ordinary English people haven't been treated any better by the government down the years. Enclosure and the Portaloo Massacre (or do I mean Peterloo?) are two examples that spring to mind.
This from Wikipedia:
Many landowners became rich through the enclosure of the commons, while many ordinary folk had a centuries-old right taken away. Land enclosure has been condemned as a gigantic swindle on the part of large landowners, and Oliver Goldsmith wrote "The Deserted Village" in 1770 deploring rural depopulation. An anonymous protest poem from the 17th century summed up the anti-enclosure feeling:
They hang the man, and flog the woman, That steals the goose from off the common; But let the greater villain loose, That steals the common from the goose.
It's not the English people who have done these things, but the British Government. I'll finish with a song. Join in if you know it!
The Internationale
Stand up, all victims of oppression For the tyrants fear your might Don't cling so hard to your possessions For you have nothing, if you have no rights Let racist ignorance be ended For respect makes the empires fall Freedom is merely privilege extended Unless enjoyed by one and all
Chorus: So come brothers and sisters For the struggle carries on The Internationale Unites the world in song So comrades come rally For this is the time and place The international ideal Unites the human race
Let no one build walls to divide us Walls of hatred nor walls of stone Come greet the dawn and stand beside us We'll live together or we'll die alone In our world poisoned by exploitation Those who have taken, now they must give And end the vanity of nations We've but one Earth on which to live
And so begins the final drama In the streets and in the fields We stand unbowed before their armour We defy their guns and shields When we fight, provoked by their aggression Let us be inspired by like and love For though they offer us concessions Change will not come from above

| Yes, of course I meant England. Ritva you make me want to read more - I had a discussion recently with Jon about enclosure etc. and how it was in Finland. I think it was in answer to some quiz question. They don't, apparently, even have villages in Finland. But what I read at the time was a bland account of the process, not the politics behind it. Was it really only England that was so ferocious in it's attempts to conquer? As for the British government - long live the revolution. But if we overthrew them I suspect the up-coming new one would be the same. How far have we strayed from Hajduk's posts...... sorry Haj. | |

| Wales? Do you mean that place that has Llanfairgwgyngllgogeryllyndrobellantisylligogogoch in it (or something that looks similar, as I did that without looking it up) Anything or anyone would be nervous coming from somewhere with names like that. | |

| No, I don't think the English have a monopoly on aggression.
The Irish, for example, had a long history of raiding and taking control of large chunks of the big Island, including totally taking over Caledonia - leading to it's modern name of Scotland. (The Irish in question were known as Scotii.)
But facts get in the way of a good story...
